ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) -- This flu season is bad, but according to new data, no state in the nation is seeing higher rates of it than Missouri.

The company Kinsa, which makes smart thermometers, analyzed data collected from more than one million users nationwide.

So far this season there have been more than 40,000 cases of the flu in Missouri, more than 8,000 of which came last week. This year the state has recorded 659 deaths since flu season began October 7, including 108 deaths from last week alone.

There have been four flu-related school closures across the state, including two in the St. Louis area.

It's not too late to get your flu shot. This year's shot only prevents 10 to 30 percent of cases caused by the most prevalent strain, but doctors say it can still lessen the symptoms.
