ST. LOUIS, Mo. ( – Community leaders and residents gathered Saturday morning to honor the legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and discuss the challenges that many St. Louis neighborhoods face.

With Martin Luther King Jr. Day taking place on Monday, several St. Louisans met for an observance to share a message about promoting peace at the civil rights icons’ statue in the Fountain Park neighborhood.

The Rev. Derrick Perkins Sr. of Centennial Christian Church said the state of the community drew the crowd out.

"We're here because our communities are in shambles. As we just heard from our chief, there is an area in St. Louis that is responsible for 50 to 60 percent of the violence in St. Louis.  We're here at a time when our world is forced to make us choose sides. We have liberals on one side, conservatives on the other side," Perkins said.

After the service, the St. Louis Marching Cobras marching band led the crowd in a peace march through the Fountain Park and Lewis Place neighborhoods.
