Spanish Fort armed robbery caught on camera

SPANISH FORT, AL (WALA) -

Police are asking for the public’s help catching an armed robber.  He was caught in the act on Christmas Day by surveillance cameras at a Spanish Fort convenience store.  It happened as customers were going in and out of the store and police said he had the help of a getaway driver.

It was about 5:15 p.m. Christmas Day when Spanish Fort Police said an unidentified suspect robbed the Circle K, Shell station, getting away with beer, cigarettes, and cash.  Investigators are hoping surveillance video released of the suspect will bring him to justice.

“The man’s six foot, three to maybe six foot, five and he’s got long hair…has it in a ponytail…had it pulled back through the hat so if he lets the hair down, it’s probably going to be about shoulder length,” said Detective Rick Chenoweth with Spanish Fort Police.

The suspect was wearing a Denver Broncos sweatshirt and a ball cap.  He had a mustache and beard and police think the neck muff or scarf he was wearing might be hiding tattoos or other markings.  While he never pulled a weapon, in the video he can be seen lifting his sweatshirt to show the clerk a handgun tucked into his waistline.

“He pulled up his shirt.  He showed her the gun.  He told her it was a robbery and that he had a gun and that’s the same thing as putting the gun to her forehead and saying give me the money or I’m going to shoot you,” Chenoweth explained.

The suspect timed the robbery while customers were leaving the store, but even as other customers entered, he calmly carried out the crime.  This makes police think he’s done this before.

“He acted like he’s done it before, maybe not in this area, but he’s done it before and so the way he acted was very calm,” Chenoweth said.

Police said the suspect made his way across the street to a waiting vehicle and made his getaway.  A witness who was a customer told police it was an older model Chevrolet pickup with an emblem of some sort on the driver’s door.  If you saw anything that would help police or recognize the suspect you’re asked to call Spanish Fort Police.
