WENTZVILLE, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

Wentzville police arrested three teenagers after they were caught on camera stealing packages off a front porch.

On Wednesday, Lewis Lucarelli noticed Christmas presents that were meant to be delivered were missing. A quick look at their surveillance video showed two teenagers walk up to the porch and take the packages.

“A little bit violated, angry, wasn't sure what to do next to replace the presents,” said Lucarelli.

He shared the video on Facebook with neighbors in the Stone Meadows subdivision and quickly neighbors were helping to try to identify the two teenagers.

Wentzville police say the increased use of surveillance cameras is incredibly helping in tracking down criminals.

“Neighbors helping neighbors and neighbors helping us,” explained Chief Kurt Frisz.

They arrested two of the teenagers, but the third was caught when he tried to return one of the stolen packages.

“I see someone walking between the houses across the street. I recognize the face, it was one of the boys in the video so I marched straight across the street and confronted him,” said Lucarelli.

Lucarelli said the teenager saw himself on the video shared on social media and felt guilty. The package was opened but not the toy inside. As a father, Lucarelli said he gave the high school student a stern lecture.

“I did get an apology which meant something.”

But Chief Frisz said the teens, ages 15 and 16, are connected to other crimes in the neighborhood, including other package thefts and garage break-ins.

Lucarelli says he’s just glad their Christmas presents were returned.

If you have a package stolen, the US Postal Service says you can make a report here. They also have a new service called Informed Delivery which allows you to see your incoming packages and reschedule to a time when you are home.

Amazon also has several services to protect your packages from thieves, including Amazon Key and Amazon Lockers. If a package is stolen, Amazon says they will work with the customer to make it right. It depends on the situation but that could mean a refund or a replacement.
