ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. (KMOV.com) -- The St. Louis County Police Department honored a trailblazing woman Thursday.

Jean Schrieber received a standing ovation inside the County council chambers in Clayton, celebrated for being the first female police officer ever hired by the department.

Thursday marks sixty years since she joined the force.

Other officers call her a pioneer.

"It's important to recognize her because without her we wouldn't be here today,” said Captain Melissa Webb

Schrieber says times have changed. When she joined the department six decades ago, she wore a skirt as part of her officer uniform.

She also carried her handgun in a purse.
