ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

Nestle Purina PetCare said Thursday the company is eliminating up to 300 positions in its U.S. facilities, including its headquarters in St. Louis, through an early retirement option.

Managers and other supervisors were notified of the option at the end of November of the new ‘Vision 2020’ initiative that’s open to retirement-eligible managers or supervisors aged 55 or over who have worked for Purina for at least 10 years.

In response to questions about the move, the company released this statement:

“The pet care industry is more competitive and changing faster than at any time in our history. In the face of these unprecedented challenges, Nestlé Purina continues to be a growth driver and a strategic priority for Nestlé. In order for Purina to grow market share, we have launched a major initiative focused on organizational structure and cost-competitiveness that creates opportunities for greater investment in high-growth areas, while positioning the organization for continued success.

This will result in a limited reduction in the number of associates, primarily accomplished by not filling some open positions and through attrition, including retirements. Approximately 300 associates are eligible for early retirement.  We expect cost-reduction and reorganization efforts through the end of Q1 2018.

It is premature to provide any other specifics, however, we intend to communicate directly with our associates and believe these actions will position the company for future growth and continued success.”

The company added in the release that their "outstanding associates and culture will remain keys" to the company’s future.
