ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

Health officials are reporting widespread flu cases in dozens of states, including Missouri.

Recently two area schools closed their doors because students were sick with the flu.

The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services shows 3,558 cases of the flu have been reported this year. This time last year, there were 606 cases.

Since October, about 370 deaths have been linked to pneumonia and the flu, according to the health department.

State research also reports six flu outbreaks in Missouri nursing homes this year

Illinois reports low activity with only 167 confirmed cases.

The CDC recommends the following three preventative steps:

  1. Take time to get a flu vaccine.
  2. Take everyday actions to stop the spread of germs (washing your hands and avoiding close contact with sick people).
  3. Take flu antivirus medications if your doctor prescribes them.
