Racist comment found on blackboard at SIUE

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (KMOV.com) – Southern Illinois University – Edwardsville has issued a statement after a racist comment was found on a blackboard in a classroom.

A comment regarding the 1857 Dred Scott decision was found on a blackboard in Peck Hall Thursday morning, according to university officials.

Below is the statement the university posted on their Facebook page Thursday evening:

A racist comment on a blackboard regarding the 1857 Dred Scott decision, an historic decision that many scholars denounce as one of the worst decisions in the history of the Supreme Court and led to the addition of the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, was discovered this morning in Peck Hall and brought to the administration’s attention this afternoon.

SIUE denounces racism and bigotry, and strongly encourages all members of our community to do the same and to act according to the University’s values of inclusion, wisdom, citizenship, integrity and excellence.

We remain committed to maintaining a safe, secure and inclusive campus environment for all students, faculty and staff.

The university is asking anyone who may information about the comment to contact SIUE police at 618-650-3324.
