ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

A local non-profit, Books for Newborns, brings bags of books to parents with babies in the Neo-Natal Intensive Care Unit or NICU.

In the first year of business, the organization teamed up with three area hospitals, including St. Louis Children’s hospital.

The chief medical officer says the books help relieve some of the families’ stress.

“The families who have babies in the NICU are going through times of great difficulty, in terms of trying to understand if their baby will survive, very important for them to feel involved in their baby’s care,” said Chief Medical Officer, Dr.Cole.

The response from families on the receiving end has been overwhelming.

“Thank you so much my little girls so small, this allows me the opportunity to bond with them early, to read to them, being a mom started earlier than expected,” said mother Aubrey Mieldezis.

The President of Books for Newborns hopes the family ritual continues when they’re able to go home.
