MADISON COUNTY, Ill. (KMOV.com) -

All weekend long, holiday shoppers could pick out unique gifts at the Cahokia Mounds Native American Holiday Market.

"Our jewelry and the making of the designs has been passed down for generations so our pueblo is well-known for the jewelry making," said Emilio Chavez who traveled with his wife Marguerite from New Mexico.

They, along with about 30 other Native American artists from around the country came to Illinois to sell their handmade art. Paintings, bead work, jewelry, sculptures, and more were available at the three-day event.

"We are trying to keep connection with Indian culture here at Cahokia Mounds and while these people might not be direct descendants from the people who were here originally, they carry on the tradition and feel this is a sacred place so we like to keep the tradition with modern Indian people today," said Bill Iseminger, assistant manager at Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site

The 14th annual holiday market wraps up Sunday evening. But organizers say they have three markets each year. The next one will be in the spring.
