ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) -- Missouri is the worst place to online date.

So, what makes it so terrible? BackgroundChecks.org used a few things for its rankings; the study found Missouri ranked in the bottom because of its high risk for identity theft. Another factor in the state's last-place finish was violent crime.
Best advice for singles: just do your homework.

“You can search someone online fairly easy to find out even if they're legit or a real person, verifying their Facebook, verifying their other social media, LinkedIn, there's a lot of ways you can verify who someone is,” said Timmy Gibson, a relationship coach.

Illinois did not fair much better; it came in at number 44 on the list. Meanwhile, the safest state for online dating was Vermont.
