SHILOH, Ill. (KMOV.com) -

A man and woman from the Metro East are facing charges for allegedly abusing their baby.

Matthew Espino-Tonche, 21, and Elyssa Arellano, 19, are charged with aggravated battery of a child with great bodily harm and causing child endangerment.

Police said they received a call from a hospital around 5:30 a.m. Monday where they met with Epsino-Tonche who claimed he found a baby girl in a dumpster in Shiloh. The infant, who is less than a month old, had sustained serious injuries, police said.

Police said they later learned that Epsino-Tonche is the baby’s father, and that the child was never in a dumpster.

Authorities said they later found Arellano, who is Espino-Tonche’s girlfriend, and the child’s mother, hiding in the back seat of Espino-Tonche’s car. Both were arrested.

The child is in serious, but stable condition.

Police said the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services was contacted.
