COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

Mizzou men's basketball player Michael Porter Jr. will undergo surgery that will likely cause him to miss the remainder of the season.

The announcement came in a statement from Mizzou Basketball, stating Porter will have surgery Tuesday in Dallas, Texas.

The procedure, a microdiscectomy of the L3-L4 spinal discs, has a projected recovery time of three to four months.

Head coach Cuonzo Martin is optimistic about the remainder of this season, even without the team's star freshman.

“Our top priority as a program is the well-being of our student-athletes, so Michael beginning this process to be 100% healthy is important to all of us," said Martin. "Our focus has been on Michael’s well-being, just like every other player in our locker room."

In the statement, Porter expressed appreciation for the support from the fans, even as his season has come to an end.

“I really appreciate the support of my family and program as I begin this process," said Porter. "I’m thankful for the kind words and messages I’ve received from fans. Those mean a lot to me. I cannot wait to be completely healthy and playing the game I love, once again.”

Porter was considered the number one recruit in the country coming into the season and, if healthy, profiled to be an NBA lottery pick.
