JENNINGS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -- An overnight fire left one man dead and a roommate shaken Tuesday.

The fire broke out just before 2 a.m. on Murvale Drive, just off Jennings Stations Road.

A 44-year-old man's body was found in the kitchen underneath debris, and fire officials believe that’s where the fire started.

When firefighters arrived on scene, they encountered heavy flames at the rear of the house.

Melted smoke detectors were found in the home, though officials say it’s unclear if they were working at the time of the fire.

The victim had a roommate who wasn't at the house at the time for the fire, but came home and encountered the aftermath.

"The homeowner showed up, said his roommate was not accounted for,” said Riverview Fire District Chief Keith Goldstein. “Right now, this scene is under investigation from the Metro Bomb and Arson Squad of the St. Louis County Police."

At this point, the fire is not believed to be suspicious.

There were reports on scene the victim was disabled, but the chief was unable to confirm that information.
