SOUTH ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) -

Police said a man in his 70s was shot with a BB gun in Soulard Saturday night.

The man was shot in the head near the intersection of 11th and Russell just before 7:20 p.m.

Authorities said the man suffered superficial injuries and was conscious and breathing when he was taken to a hospital.

"Somebody drove by and they just opened fire, started shooting at him," said Billy Newby.

"For no reason?" asked News 4's Eric Cox.

"For no reason!" said Newby.

Billy Newby lives on south 11th Street in Soulard.

Newby told News 4 his 77-year-old friend, Darell Woltkamp, was on his way over when a car pulled up while he was getting off the bus.

The passengers opened fire on the elderly man, hitting him in the head and legs with a BB gun.

"Punks," said Newby. "Just punks."

Newby said he dialed 9-1-1 after watching his friend hobble to his doorstep, bleeding and pleading for help.

"Wonderful man," said Newby. "Wouldn't cause anybody any harm at all."

Officers are on the lookout for an older model brown sedan, hoping to find the suspects before anyone else is attacked.

"With something like this, they're concerned there's going to be more incidents," said Newby.
