EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (KMOV.com) -

A freshman student at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville was arrested after her two-year-old son was found alone in her in campus apartment. 18-year old Darielle Smith is charged with endangering the life or health of a child.

Malik Harrison told News 4 he saw the toddler on a second floor apartment Tuesday afternoon.

"And I saw him and he just yelled out. He was just like 'hey,' You know I didn't think much of it, I assumed his mom or dad was in the apartment with him because he went back in the apartment."

Police said someone who saw the boy called the the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services hotline and when police investigated they found no one else in the apartment with the boy.

Deputy Child Dan Keeton said, "The child was taken into protective custody and brought back to the department. And our investigation identified the mother who was subsequently interviewed and it was discovered she routinely left the child unattended."

According to police, Smith said she sometimes left the child alone for up to 12 hours.

Other students who live nearby said they were upset that Smith didn't reach out for help with childcare.

"There's lots of resources out here, so we were kind of like blown away, like wow. Because like I say she could have knocked on anybody's door and got some help," said Katrice Williams.

The early childhood development center on campus provides discounts on daycare for students.
