ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) -- Members of the Parkway Central Middle School band are enjoying an unusual music class.
In the United Sound class they act as music mentors for special needs students:
The class is open to 7th and 8th grade band members. They use food images to help teach how to read notes.
Teachers and students say this is about much more than music.
“We're learning how to communicate and interact with everybody so it’s a great opportunity,” said Paul Hozen, a teacher.
“It teaches so much to me about how to deal with other people and how to be patient," Peyton Heimburger, an 8th grade student, said.
The program was the first in Missouri and 13th in the nation.
