SOUTH ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) -

A South City warehouse that caught on fire Wednesday housed thousands of books belonging to a local publisher.

The warehouse held books belonging to Reedy Press, which publishes books by a number of St. Louis-based authors.

Author Carol Shepley, who saw the smoke from her own condo, said her books were inside the warehouse. She said the loss is devastating.

Shepley added it is also tragic the fire happened a month before Christmas because many of the books put out by Reedy are very popular during the holiday season.

The publisher's online bookstore is also shutdown due to the fire.

Reedy Press later released the following statement:

Today was traumatic for Reedy employees and for others who worked at Park Warehouse. I want to send a special thanks to both the firefighter and the Park Warehouse employee who were injured trying to extinguish the fire. Bravery was on display today.

The fire broke out Wednesday morning at the Park Warehouse Service Building in the 3900 block of Park Ave.  Firefighters said there may have been hazardous materials inside the building.

Toys meant for the patients at Shriners Hospital were also inside the warehouse.
