TROY, Mo. (KMOV.com) – A Troy, Missouri couple was charged with several counts of child abuse after police discovered their 11-month-old son with multiple bruises.

On Friday, the Troy Police Department and Lincoln County Ambulance District were called out to the 700 block of West Wood St. about an injured child.

Upon arrival, officers and paramedics observed an 11-month old baby with bruises, cuts to the head and face, human bite marks on his body, and blood surrounding these injuries and inside both of his ears and his nose.

Police say the boy’s ear and lips were severely discolored due to bruising. The baby was immediately transported to a St. Louis Area pediatric hospital via Airevac medical helicopter.

During an interview with authorities, the boy’s father Brandon D. Johnson advised police he and his son were alone inside their apartment all night Thursday and laid down on the living room couch around 11 p.m. and did not fall asleep until 2:30 a.m.

Johnson said other than a few scratches from the family cat, the baby had no apparent injuries before the two fell asleep. When Johnson woke up around 5 a.m., he discovered his son covered in blood along with a cut on the right side of his head.

In a police report, Johnson says he used baby wipes to clean off the blood of his son and then changed his blood soaked onesie.

Johnson said he had no idea what happened to his son.

When police questioned Johnson as to why he did not immediately contact authorities, he said he “freaked out” and did not know what to do.

At approximately 7 a.m., the boy’s mother Kristen Hooper came home and observed the injuries. Around 8:30 a.m., Johnson contacted his mother and told her to come to the couple’s apartment.

When Johnson’s mother arrived at 9 a.m., she contacted an off-duty Troy police officer and advised him of the injuries to the baby. The officer then contacted police and medics to respond to the residence.

The baby went into emergency surgery around 1 p.m. to repair internal injuries of the mouth due to trauma. At the hospital it was also determined that the infant’s nose was broken and both eardrums were ruptured.

Johnson is charged with three counts of Abuse or Neglect of a Child with serious physical injury. His bond is set at $250,000.

Hopper is charged with one count of Abuse or Neglect of a Child with serious physical injury. Her bond is set at $100,000.

The child was placed in protective custody.
