ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

The St. Louis Blues have canceled plans to build an ice facility near Creve Coeur Lake.

The proposal was originally approved by St. Louis County but has been a source of controversy in recent months.

The non-profit group trying to develop a large ice rink complex will take their plans to a site in Maryland Heights.

The Blues have been helping to get the project built, that will have four rinks for amateur and college hockey, youth tournaments and a rink to serve as the Blues new practice facility.

Land preparations had already begun, but the project was met with protests from local residents. The National Park Service ordered work to be halted on the project and said the complex would not encourage outdoor recreation in the rest of the park.
