ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

There's something to be said about a career that takes you full-circle. Danielle Harris is a U.S. Army Master Sergeant and she's ending her 21 year long career at the same place it started, Fort Leonard Wood.

Harris is retiring with an official U.S. Army ceremony at the Hilton in downtown St. Louis on Veteran's Day.

Harris served a tour in Bosnia in 1997 as part of a peace enforcement operation, "I was a private, so it was very scary," said Harris, who served another tour in Kuwait in 2012.

Again, this was on a peace keeping mission.

"Everything I've done was to support my brothers and sisters while they were in combat," said Harris.

However, just because she was monitoring peace after combat, she was in no way safe while she was on these tours overseas.

"Everyday both me and my husband talk about the times that we probably shouldn't be here," said Harris.

Her husband is also serving in the U.S. Army and not retiring yet.

Harris said she's ready to retire while she's still young and she's anxious to go on new adventures.

"I'm going to take a break and stop and smell the flowers and just see where it goes from there," said Harris.

After spending two decades seeing war first hand and saving lives, she gained a greater perspective on it all.

"Don't sweat the small stuff, and it could be worse. So when you wake up in the morning, you should be thankful, like I thank God when I wake up in the morning, like I get to see the sun rise and many others didn't get that chance," said Harris.

This perspective has also helped her appreciate her loved ones so much more. Many of them have flown from all over the country to celebrate her retirement on Veteran's Day.

"Twenty-one years! An epic weekend. I love you guys," said Harris as she toasted with her family.
