EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. (KMOV.com) -

Late Thursday afternoon fire crews responded to a Metro East fire at a home located at 10th and Katherine Dunham Place.

Carl Spraggins Jr., the owner of the home, says he walked up to his front door but before he walked in he noticed something wrong.

“Before I opened the door I smelled smoke,” said Spraggins, “I opened the door and immediately got overwhelmed by smoke.”

Firefighter George McClellan said crews made their way into the basement where the fire started. According to McClellan, the fire went from the basement through the walls and up into the attic

The house was eventually deemed a total loss. Spraggins says he lost everything.

“Basically, the only thing I got is what I got on me now,” he says, “That’s it.”
