ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

Art helps heal – that’s the vision behind an organization helping veterans.

Visions for Vets has been using art to empower the men and women who have served our country.

Scott Beaty served in the Navy for 23 years and he’s an artist.

Twice a week nearly 40 veterans, just like him, meet in the sculpture room at Fontbonne University.

“In that quietness, you have the time to reflect inside your heart and you can study or examine in the same process, you sculpt what’s happening in your life,” said Beaty.

Graduate students and artists volunteer their time to lead workshops for the vets, encouraging them to explore drawing, painting and ceramics in a non-threatening environment.

And Beaty said they need it.

“This may be the only place in the whole week that veterans have to go to feel like that’s where he belongs, and that’s Visions for Vets,” Beaty said.

Visions for Vets empowers the men and women who have served through the power of art.

Twice a week they meet to stretch their minds and creativity.

Although Beaty found himself addicted to pain pills after returning home from serving, he still wanted to help other vets and in the process, he ended up helping himself.

“We’ve saved the lives of a few and changed the lives of everybody who stepped into this organization,” Beaty said.
