O'FALLON, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

A student at Fort Zumwalt West High School brought a handgun and two bullets to school Thursday.

A school district press release said another student reported to an assistant principal that a classmate was in possession of the weapon at school. The school resource officer and the assistant principal immediately interviewed and searched the suspected student and discovered an unloaded handgun. The student also had two bullets.

By 9 a.m., the student was taken into custody and taken to the St. Charles Juvenile Detention Center. Police said the student is 16 years old.

Parents of students were notified Thursday morning of the incident.

Fort Zumwalt School District Superintendent Bernard DuBray said in the press release that the district asks for continued parent support in discouraging students from bringing weapons of any sort and toys resembling weapons to school.
