NORTH ST. LOUIS COUNTY (KMOV.com) -

Police have arrested the man they say threw an explosive object at them as he fled in Wellston on Tuesday night.

29-year-old Donnie Shepard was arrested in his home in north St. Louis county around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday. Police say they found a firearm and a felony amount of marijuana at the house.

According to officials, officers with the North County Cooperative were on the scene of what they thought was a drug transaction Tuesday. When officers moved in to arrest the suspect, who they identify as Shepard, they say he sped off in his car and threw an object at officers that exploded.

"A lot of smoke ensued, very loud bang," North County Police Cooperative Capt. Clay Farmer said. "We received several 911 calls in reference to that explosive device. Got a little dangerous because of traffic so they decided to back off the vehicle."

Police said no officers were injured.
