DITTMER, Mo. (KMOV.com) - A well-known story of six steers escaping a slaughterhouse in north St. Louis ended on a good note with many of the steer, including Chico, finding a new home.

“The entire community watched these cows escape,” said Michelle Roberstson of the Gentle Barn.

Thousands of people were captivated by the six cows that literally ran for their lives.

“These cows realized what was going to happen to them there and they had the idea to get out there,” said Robertson.

Michelle Robertson is the manager at the Gentle Barn of Missouri. She says the barn located in Ditmmer is a result of thousands of caring people who raised $400,000 to bring the animal rescue to Missouri.

“The community banned together and raised money for them and they contacted us and we came out and got them,” said Robertson.

Now Chico, Rue, Johnny Cash, Houdini, and Eddie can all be seen at the Gentle Barn. Sadly, the sixth cow Spirit shortly died after their escape.
