ST.LOUIS COUNTY (KMOV.com) - A new report has been released about how many prescription drugs are being used in St. Louis County and some of the numbers are quite shocking.

According to the 20-page report, women ages 65 and older are the leading users of prescription drugs. It also states that, for every 1,000 women in St. Louis County, 1,6000 prescriptions for controlled substances are filled.

It also shows the most frequently prescribed drugs are opioids. The most popular opioids are hydrocodone, oxycodone and tramadol.

Low dose opioids are the most commonly prescribed.

The St. Louis County Prescription Drug Monitoring Program is the first locally-based program in the country. The program is meant to stop prescription drug abusers from getting multiple prescriptions from multiple doctors.
