JERSEYVILLE, Ill. (KMOV.com) -- Two parents are being charged with murder after a 6-year-old child was found dead from malnourishment.

A news release from the Jerseyville Police Department said Michael Roberts, 42, and the child's step-mother Georgena Roberts, 42, are facing murder and child endangerment charges.

According to police, officers were called to Jersey Community Hospital on November 3 in reference to the deceased, malnourished child.

Police said the investigation revealed that two children, ages 6 and 7, were deprived food as a form of punishment. An autopsy conducted on the child revealed the cause of death was "failure to thrive due to 'extreme malnourishment."'

Georgena Roberts was charged with endangering the health of a child in 2005, but the charges were dismissed. She did, however, plead guilty to a possession of a controlled substance charge at the time.

The six-year-old child lived at the home with five other children. The other children inside the home were taken into protective custody.

A friend told News 4 DCFS was called earlier in 2017.
