ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

Daylight saving is a great time to remember to chance more than clocks. It is also the perfect time to remember to change the batteries in your smoke detectors.

It can be easy to forget about smoke detectors, even though they are crucial for increasing survival rates when fires do happen. The St. Louis Fire Department urges people to change their smoke detector batteries twice a year. With daylight saving happening twice a year, this is the perfect time to remember to change those batteries.

The push for remembering to change your smoke detector batteries is part of the "Change Your Clock Battery" program.

Fire officials said having a working smoke detector increases survival rates during a fire by 50 percent. However, fire officials also said it is a good idea to check your smoke detectors even more than the recommended twice per year.

The St. Louis Fire Department will be canvassing neighborhoods throughout the city today, installing smoke alarms and helping families develop emergency exit plans for their homes.
