ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

Friday night, the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra takes a step outside of its comfort zone.

"Jurassic Park" will be showing on the big screen while the musicians play on stage at Powell Hall.

“A lot of times you go to the movies and you're so captivated by the movie itself, [you] don’t necessarily focus on the music … but here, you see the musicians live performance of the soundtrack,” said Shannon Wood of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra.

The movie’s music isn’t coming through a speaker like at the theater. At the symphony, it’s live.

“When you have a live orchestra play this music, it hits your heart so profoundly,” said Gemma New, the resident conductor for the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra.

The symphony is performing Grammy and Academy-Award Winning Composer John Williams’ score – Welcome to Jurassic Park.

And they admit it’s a bit of a challenge.

“My instrument is the timpani, drums with pedals, parallel a low contra bass part, [it] involves a lot more footwork, not something [you] typically do in classical or romantic repertoire,” Wood said.

And it’s a lot more work for the conductor, too.

“Music breaths, orchestra wants to be flexible, but the click tracks keep going, always a battle,” said New.

The symphony describes the performance as one-of-a-kind and exhilarating. And they hope people will come join them for one of the three weekend performances.

Tickets are still available for Friday’s "Jurassic Park" in concert that starts at 7 p.m. "Jurassic Park" will also be showing on Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
