ST. LOUIS ( -- There was a lot excitement Thursday in downtown St. Louis, as the aquarium at Union Station will soon begin to take shape.

A groundbreaking was held today at the site of the Saint Louis Aquarium.

Project leaders say you can expect tanks that hold thousands of aquatic animals from both rivers and oceans.

Construction will begin at the end of this November and is expected to be completed summer of 2019.

The $45 million attraction will be located in the former mall area inside the St. Louis Union Station and feature one-of-a-kind exhibits and tanks. It will include a shark tank that will hold one of the largest collections of sharks in the Midwest and will feature a Shark Bridge, described as a unique V-shaped rope bridge that will suspend visitors inches above it.

The aquarium will be an accredited member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, which holds members to highest standards in animal care and exhibition, according to a press release. An animal husbandry team of marine biologists and aquarists will be responsible for the long-term care of the animals.

The aquarium will also have an 8,500 square-foot private event space that will have the shark tank as a backdrop for weddings, social events and corporate parities.

A million visitors are expected to visit the attraction annually.

The aquarium is part of a $70 million family entertainment complex located at Union Station. Other components include a 200-foot observation wheel and a Fire & Light Show at the lake.
