Illinois lawmakers weighing possible state entry toll on highways

Posted: Updated:

ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) -- Residents in the Metro East, who work in Missouri could soon be forced to pay a highway toll every time they return home enter the state.

It's one of the suggestions Illinois lawmakers are considering to help fund road projects.

It has strong support in an online survey posted to get public input, with about 73 percent of people saying the best way to fund improvements is to raise the cost of license plates and driver's licenses.

The second most popular suggestion is a toll road that would only toll drivers as they enter the state from an interstate highway.

About 30-percent of people surveyed support raising the state's fuel tax.
