St. Louis City Police say a group of young suspects between the ages of 10 and 15 robbed a woman feet away from Cherokee Street in south St. Louis, where people are regularly out walking around from shop to shop or enjoying a meal.

"Absolutely not, I am not surprised," said Cheyenne Metts. "Stuff like that happens all the time."

Officers say the robbery happened around 6 Sunday evening near the intersection of California Avenue and Cherokee Street.

A 57-year-old woman was getting out of her car when she was approached by 5 boys between the ages of 10 and 15, demanding she hand over her purse.

After failing to fight them off, the woman fell, and the young attackers kicked her until they broke her hold on the bag.

"I'm taking more precautions, trying not to walk by myself," said Metts "Just trying to make sure there's a close friend walking with me so that I'm not alone."

"The police pass a lot of the time so you feel good," said Saddam Escobar. "That's all I can say, it feels good during the day."

Escobar told News 4 he regularly visits Cherokee Street, but never after nightfall.

"Not at night, during the night you're not going to walk around here because it's real, real bad," said Escobar

Police say the purse was later found less than a block away from where the robbery happened on Nebraska Avenue, but the victim's money and keys were no longer in it.

The investigation is still ongoing.
