Police said an accident involving a trash truck and SUV has closed an intersection in Fairview Heights.
Authorities say a loaded trash truck hit an SUV before it hit a power pole near the intersection of Old Collinsville Road and Milburn School Road around 3:30 p.m. Friday.
The power pole was briefly hot, police said, but an Ameren worker who happened to be nearby de-activated the line within a few minutes.
Two victims inside the SUV were taken to a hospital, one is in critical condition, police said.
A 40-year-old man was driving the SUV and later died at the hospital. A 12-year-old girl was also inside the SUV and was taken to the hospital with multiple fractures. .
The trash truck driver was shaken up but not seriously injured.
Authorities say they expect the intersection to be closed for several hours. Accident reconstruction crews are on the scene.
