Free lead screenings offered for children in Jennings

JENNINGS (KMOV.com) -

The St. Louis County Health Department is offering free lead screenings Thursday for children who live in Jennings.

The city was chosen because it has the highest percentage of older homes in St. Louis County, which means older pipes.

The health department says all children between 6-months-old and 6-years-old should be tested.

“That’s when they’re the most vulnerable to lead exposure, hands in their mouth on a regular basis,: said Carrie Dickhans with the St. Louis County Health Department.

Lead can also slow a child’s growth and development, and damage hearing and speech.

Thursday’s event is from 2:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. at the Gary Gore Community Center in Jennings.

Screenings are also being offered to students at Fairview, Northview and Woodland Elementary Schools, as well as any walk-ins.
