Man accused of firing shots at Illinois State Trooper

BELLEVILLE, Ill. ( - A St. Clair County grand jury indicted a 37-year-old man from East St. Louis on aggravated assault charges after he allegedly fired shots at an Illinois State Trooper.

The indictment issued on Friday included charges of aggravated discharge of a firearm at a police officer, attempted murder of a police officer, and unlawful use of a weapon by a felon.

The incident occurred on Oct. 1, when police say Knight fled a traffic stop on Missouri Avenue at 25th Street in East St. Louis.

While the trooper was chasing Knight, Knight fired several rounds at him, authorities say.

Knight is currently being held at the St. Louis County Justice Center for a previous warrant for assault on a law enforcement officer out of Hillsdale, MO.

Knight will be extradited back to St. Clair County to face his charges.
