SOUTH ST. LOUIS COUNTY (KMOV.com) -

Thousands of veteran whose graves may have been unnoticed at Jefferson Barracks now have monuments in their honor.

After years of work, the group Meaningful Crosses helped install five monuments that stand next to the graves of 7,500 veterans.

Flat headstones were installed to make it easier for crews to mow the grass many years ago. However, family members of the deceased veterans said it was a disservice to men and woman buried at the cemetery.

Meaningful Crosses also helped start a new snow policy for flat grave markers.

If you call ahead, the cemetery will make sure the headstone is cleared off so you can see it.
