DE SOTO, Mo. (KMOV.com) - A De Soto school teacher is the sole finalist in the state for a chance to win a $100,000 grant that could benefit her elementary school.
Tracy Brosch of Sunrise Elementary uses the environment both in-and-out of her classroom to help teach her students. Just across the road from the one-building district, students have 32 acres for outdoor learning, where there is a half-mile walking loop, school garden, and a pond under construction.
But Brosch aims to build on top of the current outdoor learning foundation. She wants to build a one-acre naturescape.
"Naturescape is a natural playground," Brosch said. "Instead of climbing a jungle gym, you would climb on a boulder. Instead of having a plastic slide, you would have a tree hallowed out."
Brosch is one of 15 national finalists for Farmers Insurance Thank America’s Teachers - Dream Big competition. As a part of their campaign, Farmers will award five teachers with the most votes $100,000 each to accomplish their goals of bettering their schools and communities.
Brosch applied with her proposal for a naturescape at school. Her plans include learning stations where students can practice math or music outside, for example. She said every penny of the grant money would be needed to complete the project.
But first, Brosch needs your vote.
"We are up against huge schools in big states," Brosch said.
Those wishing to help Brosch can do so by voting her through Farmers Insurance's website. Voters need only to provide their email address to cast a vote. They can submit a vote every day through Oct. 30.
