ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

The St. Louis mayor's office announced Monday the city is joining the Smart Cities Initiative.

The initiative is about working smarter and using data to better solve problems. Ideas include smart street lights that serve other purposes like alerting police when a shot is fired, or that can turn off when people aren't around. Data could also help pin-point areas of the community that could benefit from free WiFi, giving them more opportunities.

To start, the city is looking to hire a chief technology officer. Mayor Lyda Krewson also wants to form a Smart City Commission and advisory groups, which residents will be allowed to be a part of to develop a plan.

The mayor's office said money to fund the Smart Cities Initiative will come from the St. Louis Development Corporation and from a federal community development grant.
