Rivals Sumner and Vashon come together for annual homecoming tailgate

NORTH ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

People at the annual Sumner and Vashon high school homecoming tailgate were enjoying the hot fall weather. Almost record high temperatures were broken in mid-October, making this night feel like summer.

It was a sea of Sumner maroon and Vashon blue outside Sumner high school Saturday night. Alumni spanning decades from both schools came out for the event to grill, dance, play basketball and socialize.

Although they're rival high schools, there was no animosity here, as the two schools have celebrated their fall homecoming together for years. An event many say shows the love that exists in this community in North St. Louis city.

"We want to let everyone know that this is the inner city. This is where I was raised, but it's not all bad. For the past 5 years, there's nothing negative that's been attached with this gathering," said Antwinette Scaife, a Sumner High School 1992 alumni.

Sumner and Vashon high schools first became rivals 90 years ago, back in 1927.
