Judge Jimmie Edwards named St. Louis Director of Public Safety

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

St. Louis Circuit Judge Jimmie Edwards has been named the Director of Public Safety by St. Louis Mayor Lyda Krewson, effective Nov. 6. 

The announcement of Judge Edwards new appointment came Friday morning from Mayor Krewson's office. 

Charlene Deeken, the city's current director, will continue to oversee the department until Edwards' assumes his new position in November. She will stay on as the deputy director of the city, Krewson's office said. 

Krewson said she is thrilled to name Judge Edwards as the city's Director of Public Safety. 

"His experience, temperament, and focus will bring new perspective, energy, and leadership to our police, firefighters, corrections employees, our building division, and the Civil Service Bureau," Krewson said. 

Judge Edwards was appointed to the 22nd Circuit Court in 1992. In 2013, Chief Justice John Roberts presented Judge Edwards with the William H. Rehquist Award for Judicial Excellence, which is one of the top judicial awards in the nation. 

He also create the Innovative Concept Academy, the first school in the United States supervised by a judge and dedicated to education juvenile offenders.
