Build-A-Bear workshop gave 5,000 teddy bears to four St. Louis hospitals.
Build-A-Bear's plan is to distribute 20,000 bears around the country, the number commemorating the company's 20-year anniversary.
Emily Fuhrman of Build-A-Bear said the teddy bears can provide friendship and comfort for the children.
"Teddy bear hugs are universally understood," Fuhrman said. "They are for everybody. It's something that, when you are sad, can make you feel better."
