CREVE COEUR, Mo. (KMOV.com) – A Creve Coeur family’s dog was killed by a neighbor’s dog, according to police.

The Creve Coeur Police Department confirmed the fatal attack happened in the area of Beacon Hill Lane.

Following the attack, police contacted animal control, which decided not to remove the dog from the home. Police said they would only remove the animal if it was considered dangerous by the director of St. Louis County Animal Control.

Police said they issued a citation to the dog's owner because the dog was running at large. The citation means the owner has a court date, where they could face charges but it is more likely to be a fine.

Originally, police told News 4 the dog that attacked the other was a pit bull, but later said they were not positive what type of dog it was.

No other details have been released.
