ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

In June, a St. Louis grandmother's home was sold for delinquent taxes.

According to the Collector of Revenue's office, Kim Sanders owed $518 on the property located on Elmbank Avenue.

"It's just a nightmare, pure nightmare," Sanders said while standing on her front lawn.

Sanders told News 4 she paid her taxes in full, but city records reflect otherwise. According to the Collector of Revenue's office, 861 properties were sold by the city sheriff's office in 2016. Some of those properties included vacant lots and abandoned buildings.

The purchaser of the home owned by Sanders paid $2,500 for the property, but Sanders still lives in the home.

"I've retained a lawyer, he's working on the case," Sanders told News 4.

According to Sanders' attorney, homeowners in St. Louis can fight a tax sale, even after the property is sold.

Jeffrey Weisman told News 4 homeowners like Sanders can work out a financial arrangement with the new buyer. A second option involves going to court for a sale confirmation hearing.

During a sale confirmation hearing, original owners can argue their case before a judge, including why the property should not be sold.

Sanders tells News 4 she doesn't have the funds to work a financial deal with the new owner, so her case will likely head to court.

The original sale confirmation hearing scheduled for July was continued, and for now there isn't a new court date scheduled.

According to a spokesperson with the Collector of Revenue's office, the agency is willing to work out tax payment plans with homeowners to avoid situations like the one Sanders is facing.
