KIRKWOOD, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

The largest pumpkins in Missouri were weighed and awarded on Saturday in Republic, Mo.

The first place pumpkin broke the state record, weighing in at 1,563 lbs. However, it was the 2nd place winner, weighing in at 650 lbs., that really stuck out because it was grown in a Kirkwood neighborhood backyard, unlike a giant, rural farm.

That pumpkin was grown by 20-year-old Zachary Drozdz.

Drozdz's dedication landed him the prize for 2nd largest pumpkin in Missouri for 2017. Weighing in at 650 lbs. was a personal best for him from competing in this competition over the last three years.

"You gotta be very dedicated. What you put into it is what you get out," said Drozdz.

Drozdz planted the seeds for this prize winning pumpkin back in April. He's says he's lucky to have grown something as big as he did in Kirkwood. St. Louis saw an unusually hot summer this year, with week long stretches of 100 degree temperatures.

Drozdz first planted the seeds back in April.

"They originate from Canada, these giant pumpkins, and they like 85 for the high, 60 for the low, so the fact that we could get something on the scale that big in this area was pretty good and I'm very happy with that," said Drozdz.

In a backyard reminiscent of Linus waiting for the "Great Pumpkin" to arrive, Drozdz is waiting for next year to grow a pumpkin as great as this year's first place winner at 1,563 lbs.

"It's definitely something that I'm going to be for sure, that's my goal," said Drozdz.
