ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) -- The Better Business Bureau (BBB) is warning donors to be on the lookout for fake breast cancer charities.

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) said donors should research charities before making donations to avoid scams. In 2017, an undisclosed national breast cancer charity repaid nearly $350,000 to real charities after six years of misleading donors and racking in about $3 million of donations annually.

During October Breast Cancer Awareness Month, tons of pink ribbon products and appeals for donations are pushed out to consumers. The BBB has provided charity reviews to help protect donors by listing over 11,000 charities nationwide.

The list includes many of the BBB Accredited Charities and even details charities that contribute to cancer research.

The BBB also suggests consumers looking to support breast cancer charities by purchasing products should follow up with the charity before donating. Before purchasing products consumers should: Inspect the product for information, check the company’s website, call the company, and contact BBB to see if the charity meets the BBB’s 20 Standards of Accountability.
