BRENTWOOD, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

Work is underway to keep the lights on in Brentwood when severe weather hits. Ameren is installing new SmartGrid equipment that should reduce customer outages.

SmartGrid projects will cost approximately $650,000, and the system is already in place in other communities. Ameren is investing $785 million throughout the state of Missouri in 2017.

SmartGrid technology includes equipment dubbed “IntelliRupters.” It is supposed to quickly identify service issues and then automatically reroute power, sometimes in a matter of seconds. It can also improve response times because sensors report the issues to the utility, instead of customers having to call to report a problem.

Earlier this year, Ameren Illinois installed SmartGrid equipment in Belleville to keep up with demand at a new brewery and conference center.
