ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) – The suspect shot and killed by officers Tuesday morning attacked a neighbor with a knife before the fatal encounter, according to the St. Louis Police Department.

Around 8 a.m. officers were called to the 5200 block of Ridge for a report of a cutting. When officers arrived, they found a man severely cut, who then identified his upstairs neighbor as the suspect.

The victim told police that around 2 a.m. Tuesday, there was a fire on the upstairs balcony, which the fire department responded to. Later, after the fire was put out, the victim said his upstairs neighbors, identified as Kenneth ‘Kiwi” Herring and Kristy Thompson, came to his apartment and accused him of starting the fire, which he denied.

The argument then became physical and Thompson allegedly gave Herring a knife. After getting the knife, which was described as a large butcher knife, Herring reportedly stabbed the neighbor.

After being cut on the face, hand and body, the victim was able to push the duo out of the apartment and lock the door. The victim told police he was on the phone with his girlfriend for a part of the struggle. The girlfriend is the one who reportedly called the police.

When officers went to take the suspect into custody, Herring cut one officer on the arm using a knife, according to police. Both officers then fired towards the suspect, killing Herring.

The officer that was cut was taken to the hospital for treatment and released.

"He [the officer] will be treated and released from the hospital, so it's not that severe of an injury," acting St. Louis Police Chief Lawrence O'Toole said. "He's very fortunate though, I can tell you when you look at the injuries of the victim you can clearly tell the intent of the suspect because of the injuries to the victim. The officer is very fortunate he didn't suffer severe injuries."

A doctor said the stabbing victim’s left lung collapsed from one of the stab wounds.

Thompson was charged with first-degree assault and armed criminal action following the incident. Thompson is being held on $80,000 cash-only bond.

Police said there were several calls to the address since the beginning of the year for domestic issues.

There was reportedly a child found uninjured at the scene.

The officers have been placed on leave, per department policy.
