HERCULANEUM (KMOV.com) -

Herculaneum canceled their Fourth of July celebrations earlier this year to put all their efforts into an eclipse festival.

The celebration started Saturday and ends with the viewing party on Monday, August 21. The first even that kicked everything off was an Eclipse 5k run and 1 mile Fun Run through town.

"We're really expecting a big crowd," said Jim Kasten, Herculaneum City Administrator.

Herculaneum may be a small town, but it's making a big mark along the path of totality with one of the longest times to see a total solar eclipse.

It will hit Herculaneum at 1:17 pm and last for 2 minutes and 23 seconds. Many people are coming to this town to get the longest amount of time in total darkness.

"I knew this was where I had to be, even though I live in Arnold, it's going to be less there than it is here," said Betty Kinder, who is spending the weekend with friends in Herculaneum specifically for the Eclipse.

The weekend celebration started and will end in the Herculaneum High School track and football field.

"You know if they're calling for 90 degree days, it might make the duration of time a little better, as long as it's not here when the totality is here," said Kasten.

However for some this is less about the party and more about not missing a historic moment.

"It's just a life time event that i think everyone should take advantage of it," said Kinder, who is all about seizing these moments, "I am doing the 5k with my three friends over there...they don't want to get on camera, but you know what the camera is a once and a life time too."
