You may have noticed messages about the total eclipse from MoDOT on its traffic message boards.

MoDOT posted the messages reminding everyone about the eclipse next Monday and to expect heavier than normal traffic.

That message is expected to change as driving conditions change.

"So, our messaging is going to be advising people to drive carefully, expect more traffic, to not stop on the shoulder of the road, to pull of onto a ramp or a parking lot, and we will address those as traffic conditions change. We expect traffic to build up through the day and quiet down around the time of the eclipse, and to be pretty heavy again after the eclipse," said Jeanne Olubogun, the MoDOT District Traffic Engineer.

MoDOT officials say that if drivers take anything away from their messages, is that they should not stop on the side of the road to watch the eclipse, don't wear your eclipse glasses while driving, and to plan your day ahead of time.
